Beard Transplantation

Hair transplant surgery is increasingly used for facial hair transplants, with our specialist, Dr Jennifer Martinick, being inundated with requests from men seeking healthy and natural looking beards.

Bookings have doubled at the Sydney and Perth clinics of Martinick Hair Restoration for patients seeking a fashionable beard.  The men seeking this beard transplant surgery either want to improve on a thin beard or grow a beard for the first time in their lives.

Martinick Hair Restoration draws on its renowned Martinick Technique™, extensive experience and artistry to recreate a natural looking beard. Beard transplants, which involve painstakingly replanting individual follicles taken from a donor area at the back of the head onto the face, represent the only proven means for permanently enhanced beard growth.

Beard transplant surgery is sought by men from a variety of social and cultural backgrounds. Along with the resurgence of men seeking the ‘hipster beard’, beard transplant surgery is used for men seeking to hide acne or other scars. Transgender patients are increasingly seeking the surgery. Young men (in their twenties) and men over forty are seeking the surgery for aesthetic reasons, while many men from Asian and Middle Eastern countries have facial hair transplants for cultural reasons.  Many Muslim and Sikh patients seek a thick beard for religious reasons and a facial hair transplant is an effective way to fill in patchy or light sections.  Some Martinick Hair Restoration’s patients who lasered off their facial hair years ago have sought a beard transplant to gain back their stubble.

Facial hair transplants are performed under the same principles as modern hair transplant surgery.  The surgeon takes individual follicles from a donor area at the back of the patient’s head and painstakingly transplants the follicles one by one on the patient’s face. The procedure, which involves a team of 10 to 12 technicians, takes around six hours and usually requires around 2000 to 2500 follicular units.

A beard transplant requires meticulous planning by the transplanting physician in association with the patient.  Creating a completely natural looking beard transplant is also dependent on the surgeon’s ability to replicate the natural spiralling flow of beard hair.

Beard transplant patients leave the clinic with a face mask and this must stay in place for three days. During this time, limited movement of the face must be undertaken as the follicles have to graft in.  Patients are restricted from eating large portions of food such as apples and hamburgers and they are also asked to keep talking and laughing to a minimum.

When the bandages are removed all little hairs can be seen as double surrounded by a little black dot of scar tissue. This scam removes over the next two or three days. The new facial hair begins to grow in around three to four months, but can take up to 12 months for the full results to show.

Like all surgery, do your research before committing to a beard transplant and make sure the hair transplant specialist you see has extensive experience in this type of surgery.

It is extremely important to use an experienced hair transplant surgeon who understands the details of artistry required to produce a cosmetically superior and natural looking beard.
