Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
Hairline lowering, a simple outpatient procedure whereby patients with oversized foreheads can have their hairline brought forward to bring more balance to their face, are in rising demand from women across Australia.
Martinick Hair Restoration clinics in Perth and Sydney have been performing hairline lowering surgery for over eight years, however, rising awareness about the availability of the procedure has seen demand rise significantly over the past year.
Performed as an outpatient procedure, hairline lowering involves removing a strip of skin from the forehead and bringing the hairline forward.
Martinick Hair Restoration’s consulting physician Dr Jennifer Martinick says hairline lowering has the effect of balancing facial features to generally create a more youthful and feminine appearance.
Dr Martinick says patients tell her they feel that their abnormally high hairlines can be prematurely ageing and/or give them a masculine facial appearance.
“It is probably the only type of cosmetic surgery that someone can have a week before their wedding or some other important event,” Dr Martinick says.
“The procedure involves taking a piece of skin out of the forehead, possibly two to three centimetres, to lift and move the hair-bearing scalp forwards.
”Hairline lowering can be done in less than a morning and then involves coming back to the clinic a few days later to have the stitches removed. Patients can generally return to work as soon as the stitches are removed.
“We’ve been doing hairline lowering procedures at our clinics for years, however, demand is growing as more people have become aware of its availability. The growth of this surgery at our clinics is all due to referrals.”
Dr Martinick says hairline lowering is only suitable for patients with a high degree of scalp flexibility and is not suitable for people with male pattern baldness.
She says it’s essential for the practitioner who is performing the hairline lowering to be proficient in following the patient’s hairline to ensure a natural looking result.
The physician must also be experienced at tricophytic closures.
Unlike traditional sutures, trichophytic closures allow the hair to grow through the incision and camouflage any scarring.
Hairline lowering costs around $9,500.
